About

Singing pebbles

What do pebbles have to do with singing?

Do pebbles really sing? Sort of... Several years ago I was sitting on a beach, watching the waves push pebbles over the sand. As the waves pulled the little stones back towards the ocean, the pebbles chattered delightfully...like singing...or laughter. When you sing, breath flows in like the tide; and when it flows out, your voice sings...or laughs. It is very natural.

Everyone has a voice and can learn to sing. Have you been told that you can't carry a tune? Have you gotten "the look" from people around you when you sing? Have you always had a secret desire to sing but thought you were "too old"? Or maybe you used to sing but life sidetracked you and you'd like to get back into vocal shape? I'm here to help! I've got you covered.

Who am I?

Somewhere, buried deep where no one will find it, there is a recording of 5 year old me singing “Aquarius” from the musical Hair. I have literally been singing my whole life.  Along the way, I also developed a passion for playing the piano.  Music is the very fiber of my being.

As a singer, I have performed extensively as a soloist, recitalist, and paid chorister. My greatest musical love is chamber music. Collaborating and sharing music with wonderful colleagues is such a joy.

As an educator, I have taught the gamut:  public school general music and choir, college applied voice...private studio voice and piano. As a choir director, I have worked with both adult and children's choirs. It has been especially satisfying to direct multigenerational musical productions with performers ranging in age from 6 to 76.

My bona fides…I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Michigan State University. After a stint teaching K-12 music in public school, it was time to follow my heart and sing for my supper. I earned a Master of Music in Voice/ Opera Performance from the University of Maryland and have never looked back.

When we are not off “conquering the wilderness”, I live in Northern Virginia with my husband of so many wonderful years, our two adult sons, and an ever expanding menagerie of  furry creatures.

.

Yeah, but how?

In over 30 years of teaching, I have yet to encounter a truly hopeless case. Working together in  60 minute sessions tailored  to your unique goals, you and I will explore functional voice mechanics, ear training, music theory, and a wide variety of vocal repertoire, and we will have fun in the process. I promise!

Singing is fun!

Singing is a universal form of expression. From the whales in the ocean to the monkeys in the trees, from the birds in the sky to the people on land, every creature that breathes sings in some way or another. Come and unleash your inner vocal beast with me. It's going to be engaging and fulfilling. And laughter is encouraged!
